Learn the fascinating technique of Coptic binding in this two-day workshop! An important hallmark of this binding is that it opens flat, so it’s a great way to create truly functional journals, notebooks and sketchbooks.
We’re keeping it local this year and holding our very own bi-monthly book arts challenge. How you interpret the theme, structure, and materials used is up to you! It can be as simple or as elaborate as you like, and can be a great way to stay motivated to make books throughout the year.
Our 2022 programs will again focus on fabulous foldable structures. First up is The Victorian Puzzle Purse Valentine, taught by Connie Stricks and just in time for February 14!
The Set Book Project represents a creative partnership between NBG, the University of Alaska Press and four Alaskan poets who generously shared their books as inspiration for this collaboration. The catalog is for sale at Paper Birches.
NBG 2021 program activities focused on an exploration of foldable book structures, many based on simple accordion structures created by Hedi Kyle. The Guild introduced the compendium at its Books As Art 3 exhibition where the first printing sold out. Now in its second printing, we are offering it for sale at Paper Birches ($25 each, available during Open Studio hours on Wednesdays) or by mail order ($33, click below to order).
NBG members are invited to participate in creating a collaborative Boreal Herbarium for the exhibition, In Time Of Change: Boreal Forest Stories, scheduled for September 2022 in the Bear Gallery.
In collaboration with the Anchorage Zine Fair organized by Tent City Press, the Northwoods Book Arts Guild will host a brief demonstration of the 3 Hole Pamphlet Stitch on Zoom.

I am thrilled to announce the opening of Books as Art 3 this Friday, November 5, 2021. Last Sunday, 164 handmade books were delivered to the Bear Gallery. For those of us coordinating the InTake Event, it was an exciting afternoon. I felt a keen sense of delight as each artist opened their box or bag and set their books on the table.
This Facebook Live event will include Books As Art 3 Overview and Introduction to the Northwoods Set Book Project with reading by poet Christopher Lee Miles, author of Armor & Ornament.
