Our Studio is located in the Caribou Building, Suite 205 at 3550 Airport Way, Fairbanks, Alaska 99709. “Paper Birches”, our cooperative supply inventory, is also located there, as are most of our classes and workshops.

Meeting: Card Exchange & Lotus Folds – 11.20.14
Make plans to attend the next Northwoods Book Arts Guild meeting, at 5:00pm on Thursday, November 20, 2014, at the FAA Blue Room in Pioneer Park. Participating members will be exchanging winter cards hidden in brown paper bags… It will be great fun to see what comes out of those bags!* We will also create a model of a book using an origami styled binding called “The Lotus Fold.” This binding was featured at a recent workshop at The Folk School Fairbanks, led by Gustavus, AK book artist, Artemis BonaDea. A detailed report of the workshop and inspirations will be provided at the meeting.
*It is not too late to participate in the winter card exchange! Even if you missed the previous meeting, you may participate in the exchange: Make a winter-themed greeting card, using your choice of materials and structures. Bring it to the meeting in a brown paper lunch bag. Bags will be collected and numbered at the start of the meeting, members will draw a number, and open their corresponding bag. Surprise!
Artemis BonaDea Workshop – 11.1-2.14
Gustavus, Alaska book artist Artemis BonaDea led a pair of November workshops in Fairbanks. Organized by Tyson Rinio of UAF’s Rasmuson Library, the first focused on technical book repair and conservation skills. A number of Guild members attended, and will be exercising their new skills in their repair work at the Literacy Council and Rasmuson Library.
The second workshop featured a collaborative lotus-fold book, a secret Belgian binding book, and a nifty wrapper to protect those precious hand-made volumes.
Fabulous Hand-Made Art Journals – 10.11.14
“Fabulous Hand-Made Art Journals” was the first in this Year’s Guild Workshop series. Held at the Folk School Fairbanks on October 11, 2014, the class was small but the fun was large! Mary Baarlaer Maisch shared a “Cloth, Paper, Scissors” technique for creating art journals.
Mark-Making at the September Meeting
The September meeting was a reunion of sorts, our first gathering after the Books As Art exhibition whirlwind and the following summer hiatus. Corlis introduced a new Guild "exchange" program, whereby members who wish to participate create an item at home, then bring...
