Welcome!
Northwoods Book Arts Guild
is a community of artists actively learning about and creating artist books in Fairbanks, Alaska. The Guild promotes all aspects of book arts through education, participation in exhibitions, and community outreach.
NBG is affiliated with the North Star Community Foundation. The Foundation serves as our fiscal agent. All monetary transactions on our site, including membership and donations, are re-directed to the NSCF site in a new window.
Our Studio is located in the Caribou Building, Suite 205 at 3550 Airport Way, Fairbanks, Alaska 99709. “Paper Birches”, our cooperative supply inventory, is also located there, as are most of our classes and workshops.
Japanese Screen Structures Workshop – 07.14.16
The Japanese Screen structure is a form of board book that can be used in inventive ways. It displays easily, making a table screen that is both functional and decorative. In this workshop we will make a basic double-fold triptych structure. We will wrap the boards with Japanese papers and form sturdy hinges to join the panels allowing the screen to be opened for display or folded for storage. Techniques for adding imagery will be discussed as we look at some examples of how this structure can be used to create artist books.
Gelli-Plate Printing Workshop – 06.29.16
Play with gelli plates, stencils, string, leaves, and other pattern-making materials as you cover papers with layers of acrylic painted monoprints. Your beautiful papers can be used later to make one of a kind artist books, folios, notecards, or gift boxes.
Studio Session – Spray-Painted Papers – 06.22.16
Time to restock your supply of painted papers! This Studio Session will provide three hours of non-stop production of beautiful spray-painted papers for many bookmaking projects to come.
Studio Session – Casements For Metal Edges – 06.16.16
Keep your metal edges ready for travel in a handcrafted casement. The edges fit nicely into a protective well that is enclosed in sturdy Khadi paper, personalized with a panel of decorative paper, and bound with a tie-closure.
NBG Meeting featuring a Calligraphic Sampler – 05.26.16
Elevate your favorite quotes to a new level! Try your hand at new calligraphic styles – including flourishes, borders, and decorated initials. Then create a handy half-size file folder to hold your collection of lettering samples and handouts to inspire future projects.
