Join Mary Maisch and Kathy Dietrich for a review of the very versatile but somewhat elusive Coptic Stitch Binding.
This workshop introduces the technique of binding a book on a frame, a practice that dates back to the Middle Ages. After looking at examples of antique books, and learning how to string the sewing frame, we will create a model book using three different techniques of sewing across the spine.
Join instructor Mary Maisch on Wednesday, November 30, 2016 for two hours of making customized holiday boxes, bags, and envelopes!
The Japanese Screen structure is a form of board book that can be used in inventive ways. It displays easily, making a table screen that is both functional and decorative. In this workshop we will make a basic double-fold triptych structure. We will wrap the boards with Japanese papers and form sturdy hinges to join the panels allowing the screen to be opened for display or folded for storage. Techniques for adding imagery will be discussed as we look at some examples of how this structure can be used to create artist books.
Play with gelli plates, stencils, string, leaves, and other pattern-making materials as you cover papers with layers of acrylic painted monoprints. Your beautiful papers can be used later to make one of a kind artist books, folios, notecards, or gift boxes.
Time to restock your supply of painted papers! This Studio Session will provide three hours of non-stop production of beautiful spray-painted papers for many bookmaking projects to come.
Keep your metal edges ready for travel in a handcrafted casement. The edges fit nicely into a protective well that is enclosed in sturdy Khadi paper, personalized with a panel of decorative paper, and bound with a tie-closure.
Create an everyday journal using specialty folders and a variety of unique and interesting papers. We will design our covers, make the folios using a variety of papers, sew it all together and finish with beads.
Create your own Word Bird, a paper machè character with something to say! Using newspaper, masking tape, wire, colored tissue paper, bits of map or old book pages, and a few feathers, you will create a bird ready to stand or hang, just in time for spring migration!
