Coptic binding is a time-honored and versatile method of binding journals, sketchbooks, photo albums, and much more. Its dominant feature is a chain of exposed sewing across the spine, allowing the spine to be flexible and lay flat when open. This workshop will focus on the basic structure of a Coptic-bound book, and will include preparing the text block and cover boards, and sewing a traditional Coptic pattern. In this workshop we’ll produce two Coptic-bound books. The first will be a model book to be used as reference for future projects; the second will be a finished journal.

This workshop, led by Guild Master Margo Klass, is designed for students who have not yet been introduced to Coptic binding, or who would like to review and practice the technique. Register for the two day class, July 11 and 12, from 10:00am to 4:00pm, at The Folk School Fairbanks. Cost of the class is $130 plus a $25 materials fee payable to the instructor.

Please bring to class the following tools: cutting mat, bone folder, X-Acto knife, quilters rulers, awl, pencil, eraser, scissors.
