Workshop Series: Book Arts Basics
Northwoods Book Arts Guild is excited to offer a new series of classes, BOOK ARTS BASICS, tailored for beginners. You will learn the fundamentals of book arts by making models, the beginning of your own library of handmade books! Materials and tool kits are provided by a generous ASCA Community Development Grant
Series 1 – Getting Started
Book Arts Basics – Series 1 begins at the end of February and will consist of three classes: The Tools, The Paper and Folded Books. These classes will provide the opportunity to create sample books while learning foundational bookmaking skills.
Series 1: The Tools

Sunday, February 21. 2-4pm
Learn about the essential tools of today’s book artist. Mary will demonstrate their proper use and guide you through the construction of your first book with a simple accordion structure. All tools, materials and instructional guidelines are provided. Pick them up at the NBG Studio a few days before class.
Series 1: The Papers

Sunday, March 7. 2-4pm
Learn about the variety of papers book artists employ in the construction of their books. Learn about paper grain, folding and measuring strategies, and make a pamphlet stitched sampler book. Materials and instructional guidelines are provided. Pick them up at the NBG Studio a few days before class.
Series 1: Folded Books

Learn how to create the French Fold Book, the Lotus Fold, Dos-a-Dos, and the Origami Pocket. Make a sweet little box to hold your Folded Books! Materials and instructional guidelines are provided. Pick them up at the NBG Studio a few days before class.

You’ll need to download the Zoom app on your favorite device. A couple of days before each class, you’ll receive an email with the Zoom link. Classes are limited to 10 students, adults only. Scholarships are available.
BASIC TOOL KIT – FREE LOAN – Includes 18” x 24” self-healing cutting mat, x-acto knife and extra blades, two 18” rulers, scissors, bone folder, awl, waxed linen thread, book tape, needles and carrying case. This kit has a retail value of $85, and is FREE to you upon completion of your third class!
KIT PICK UP – Wednesday, February 17, 12-2:00pm or Saturday, February 20, 12-2:00pm. Tool kit and materials for each class are at the NBG studio at Suite 205, 3550 Airport Way, in Fairbanks.
